Yasla with two headsets on a single Mac
November 2024
For team interpreting exercises, a user asked about the possibility of using two headsets simultaneously connected to a single Mac.
This is possible with macOS built-in tools: two real audio devices with one mono input channel each are combined into one virtual audio device with two input channels; when recording, Yasla automatically mixes the two channels into one track.
- If Yasla is running, quit it
- Open Audio Midi Setup. This is located in
Applications -> Utilities
(CMD-SHIFT-U in the Finder) - Press
+
in the left column to create a newAggregate Device
. - Activate the desired headsets in the list at the bottom right (
Use
column) - Optional: Change the name of the aggregate device
- Start Yasla: The new Main Device is available as a microphone in the Audio & Video window in the Camera and Microphone section.
The new main device will remain when the headsets are removed and can be used again when the headsets are reconnected.
Some headsets appear in Audio Midi Setup as a single device (such as the Sennheiser USB headset in the figure below), others as two separate devices for inputs and outputs (Unknown USB Audio Device 1 and Unknown USB Audio Device 2 in the figure). In this case, select the device (part) with the input (In) in the list on the right.
Tip: Differences in the volume of the headsets can also be equalised in Audio MIDI Setup: Select the louder headset in the list on the left and then adjust the level on the right.
